Community Energy
Clean renewable energy generation, energy efficiency, heat delivery and innovative smart technologies are beneficial both to the community and the wider environment.
Imagine a neighbourhood powered by its own ideas and determination. This is the heart of community energy in the UK. Whether it’s rooftop solar panels, shared wind turbines, or creative schemes to help everyone use less and save more, community energy brings people together to shape a greener, fairer future.
Local groups, cooperatives and social enterprises lead the charge, making energy clean, affordable and an engine for local pride and prosperity. These projects don’t just cut carbon—they put power (literally and figuratively) back in the hands of ordinary people, giving communities a say in how they heat their homes, light their schools, and grow their economies for generations to come.
By reducing dependence on fossil fuels, we can secure a future clean energy supply, reduce bills, cut carbon, provide energy security and add protection from rising bills to reduce fuel poverty.
We can:
- Identify feasible renewable energy projects and put the decarbonisation technologies to work in communities and organisations.
- Make progress against the Government’s target to increase renewable energy generation, and promote community-owned and beneficial renewable schemes
- Promote related skills training, rural growth with job creation and retention.
- Enable communities to access the economic benefits and/or savings associated with renewable energy schemes.
- Focus on new and emerging technologies and innovations to decarbonise electricity, heating and cooling.
